Endemic. Widespread throughout Aotearoa at forest margins and stream sides. It grows with an open framework once mature to 8 m suited as a specimen tree or keep clipped as a hedge. Will grow on the coast. Evergreen.

A small tree/shrub with spreading branches of smallish round or oval ‘marbled’ toothed leaves and tangled zig-zag juvenile foliage. White flowers are followed by purple fruit, which ripen to black from March-May. Does best in a moist but well-drained site in full sun or semi-shaded site.
