Wharariki

Phormium cookianum mountain flax

Endemic. Smaller and more compact than its cousin, harakeke, Wharariki is more suited to dry conditions and is a useful revegetation plant often seen in the wild on rocky outcrops and clay banks. Grows 1m x 1m.

With its gracefully weeping habit, Wharariki is stunning in a mass planting. Like harkeke, wharariki is a Tui favourite having flowers that are a great source of nectar during the summer months.  Low maintenance it grows well in sun or shade, exposed or sheltered sites.  Extremely tough it can be used on clay banks for stabilisation.
